Autonomous Hand Washing Station
Project Type
Course
Date
October 2023 - December 2023
Objective and Scope
Worked as part of a team to design and program a LEGO EV3 robot to perform hygiene-related tasks autonomously. The robot was designed to simulate touchless operation by detecting a user’s hand and triggering a faucet-like mechanism. The robot also featured touchless temperature control through an ultrasonic sensor, allowing users to adjust the water temperature without direct contact. In addition, multiple modes were programmed into the system, including face cleansing, tooth brushing, and regular hand-washing, each activated with built-in timers to simulate real-world hygiene routines.
Approach (Individual Contributions)
- Mechanical: Assisted in designing and building the faucet mechanism that simulated water flow, utilizing LEGO EV3 components such as servo motors for actuation and ultrasonic sensors for user detection.
- Software: Programmed the robot in Robot C with 2D arrays, parallel 1D arrays, functions, and file I/O operations. Thus, developing control logic for the faucet mechanism that enabled the robot to autonomously detect a user’s hand, turn the faucet handles on when the hand was present, and switch them off when it was removed.
Outcome
- Succesfully designed and programed a LEGO EV3 robot for touch-free handwashing, teeth brushing, and face cleansing.
- Effectively implemented autonomous task execution including faucet control, soap dispensing, and detecting user temperature preferences.
- Ensured that the robot was simple to use and was user-friendly.
